Feature Spot: Nightingale Project
The Nightingale project is the playground of developers porting Songbird, the cross-platform media player that 'plays the web' to OpenSolaris. The project is endorsed by the Desktop Group.

» Last week, thanks to the efforts of Alfred, the tarball build for x86 was made available. It's made on Alfred's box with Solaris Nevada 93, Sun Studio 12.

Jim Grisanzio took this picture of the Nightingale Project Leaders at the OpenSolaris Developer's Summit last May.

Open Source
OpenSolaris is an operating system that provides a rich, coherent platform for building and running applications. The majority of the OpenSolaris code base is distributed under an OSI-approved open source license. Code based on existing open source projects continues to be available under its current license(s), and some binary-only components are covered under the OpenSolaris Binary License.

Compatible
OpenSolaris supports systems that use SPARC® and x86 families of processor architectures: UltraSPARC®, SPARC64, AMD64, Pentium, and Xeon EM64T.

Community-Driven
OpenSolaris technical communities develop a wealth of features from storage software and ZFS, to comprehensive system analysis tools like DTrace. We work on virtualization projects with Logical Domains, Xen, and Zones and Containers. We have very active groups developing high availability clustering, installation and packaging, networking and security technologies.

Our community represents a wide variety of developers, administrators, instructors and students around the world. Everyone has something to contribute. Join in the latest effort to add packages to our new network-based package management system, IPS, that is included with the OpenSolaris 2008.05 LiveCD.

Keep up with the OpenSolaris development projects by reviewing the Announcements (RSS), Build Logs, Tools, User Groups, and Mailing Lists.
